Last week we celebrated the life of Marcus’ grandmother Inge, who died recently at 93. She was a wonderful lady who, despite her deteriorating health, was lucky enough to maintain her razor sharp mind, a great sense of humour, and an immaculate home until her last days. At her funeral her four grandsons described her full and vibrant life - from her early days and loving family in Germany, to meeting her husband and becoming a displaced person after the war, to their migration and efforts establishing a new life in Australia. She was a huge part of the family, and was so proud to have her nine great-grandchildren around her often. The boys mentioned several people who had a significant impact on the trajectory of her life. These people who could not have known until much later that their offer to help them to get a bank loan, or offer them a job, or introduce them to their friends or local community group would be so serendipitous. I can name a handful of times in my life when the offer of friendship or an invitation has been the catalyst for such positive things - and certain moments when these things have been life changing. I imagine the reverse is true as well. We might never know how much not helping might impact someone who is struggling.
